Unfolding Tony Smith (proposal)
2004
47 x 27’
shot-blasted stainless steel
In 2004 I was invited to make a proposal for a permanent public sculpture at a research facility in San Francisco. My proposal, which was never completed, was to recreate the geometric panels that comprise a full-scale sculpture by Tony Smith, entitled “Cigarette.” The panels, made of shot-blasted stainless steel, were to be embedded in the surface of a plaza at the site in the pattern of an “unfolding” of the original sculpture.
