Tinned Wall/Dark Matter

1995-1997

44 x 24 x 360"

fruitcake, anodized aluminum, plexiglass

TW/DM was a temporary sculpture located on a public plaza at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco from June 1995 to October 1997. The aluminum exterior housed a serpentine wall of approximately 700 brick-shaped fruitcakes.

The fruitcake recipe was adapted from The Joy of Cooking, which clearly states that when properly stored, fruitcakes can be enjoyed up to 40 years after baking. The wall was stacked early in the morning on the day of installation, and the anodized aluminum panels were carefully riveted around the structure so that the fruitcakes were sealed up by the end of the day.

A slim window at the front edge gave a view of the contents. The ingredients were etched into the aluminum, and on warm days the smell of fruitcake surrounded the sculpture.
